Challenge

Every manufacturing process has special strengths and weaknesses which are well-known in the sector of traditional production processes. However, users are not always experienced in the field of additive manufacturing technologies. Designers could benefit from guidelines and best practices that are specific to individual AM processes.

Impact (Standardization Gaps)

The AMSC report identifies “Design Guides: Process-Specific Guides for AM” as gap D3. This proposal directly addresses this gap.

Solution

Under the framework of ISO/ASTM 52910, the general design guide, the first process-specific design guidelines were developed on powder bed fusion (ISO/ASTM 52911-1 and -2, Additive manufacturing — Technical Design Guideline for Powder Bed Fusion — Part 1: Laser-based Powder Bed Fusion of Metals and Part 2: Laser-based Powder Bed Fusion of Polymers). These guides provide an overall document structure and guidelines for standard development. This proposed project will pursue two work items for the two processes, DED and MEX.
