ASTM AM Certification Program

ASTM AM Certification Program

The additive manufacturing (AM) certification program, established by ASTM International’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE), provides a unified, standards-based approach to qualifying AM providers. This program is shaping the future of qualified AM supply chains by offering a transparent, rigorous framework that helps manufacturers meet consistent expectations across industries and reduce the burden of redundant audits.

Why AM Certification?

Unlike traditional quality certifications (e.g. ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 13485, IATF 16949), the new manufacturer certification program from the AM CoE was purpose-built for AM; developed to certify the processes, materials, and risks unique to additive manufacturing. The certification provides AM providers with a clear pathway to demonstrate readiness, differentiate themselves from competitors, and build trust with existing and prospective customers.

Collaborative Leadership

The program draws on best practices from industries that have advanced the use of AM in production. The result is a robust framework that gives manufacturers confidence in how they are assessed and offers a recognized credential across multiple customer sectors.

Unified Framework, Flexible Execution

Obtain just one AM audit recognized by many of the world’s leading manufacturers. The program uses standardized industry-agnostic audit criteria, with the flexibility to adapt to sector-specific or application-specific requirements. The audit criteria will fit any AM process(es), materials, or machines, making it indispensable as a certification tool.

Transparent Governance

Certification procedures, audit frequency, auditor qualifications, and acceptance criteria are clearly defined and openly communicated. Audits are conducted by qualified, independent assessors with expertise in additive manufacturing. In addition to providing a certificate to the auditee, ASTM will make publicly available a listing of all manufacturers certified under this program.

Strategic Benefits

  • Consistent expectations across industries
  • Establish shared expectations with customers
  • Demonstrate conformance to ISO/ASTM AM standards
  • Support a culture of quality, traceability, and continuous improvement
  • Gain visibility as a trusted, qualified AM manufacturer
  • Unlock new opportunities in aerospace, automotive, medical, energy, defense, heavy industry, and beyond
  • Save time and resources through the elimination of redundant audits

I’m interested in an Audit   Learn More about the AMCC Program

Background

The Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee (AMCC) was officially formed in 2024 as a multi-industry, OEM-led initiative created to align the world’s leading manufacturers around a shared certification model. The program was developed to address the growing need for consistent, reliable, and transparent qualification of AM service providers in sectors such as aerospace, defense, medical, automotive, and general manufacturing.

Governed by ASTM International, the AMCC defines what AM quality is and how it should be assessed. Developed with OEM-specific requirements to ensure relevance across sectors, audit criteria are built on top of internationally recognized standards, including ISO/ASTM 52901, ISO/ASTM 52904, and ISO/ASTM 52920.

The result is a manufacturer certification program that is technically rigorous, globally relevant, and practical for real-world implementation.

“The work of the AMCC enables a better understanding of the capabilities of additive manufacturing suppliers amidst the rapid growth of providers in this technology area. We are proud to support and actively participate in this crucial initiative.”

Melissa Orme, Vice President of Additive Manufacturing, The Boeing Company

“The efforts of the Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee stand to benefit our industry. The AMCC provides a great platform for end users across multiple sectors to collaboratively address common qualification challenges in additive manufacturing.”

Joseph Murphy, Associate Fellow, Lockheed Martin

“Like other sectors, the automotive industry stands to gain from a unified standard for the qualification of AM suppliers. Our participation in the AMCC has allowed us to help shape a checklist that meets our industry’s specific requirements.”

Suranjeeta Dhar, Corporate Technical Expert, Ford Motor Company

“Establishing a standardized certification for Additive Manufacturing (AM) service providers will help streamline industry efforts to develop a robust AM supply chain. We look forward to providing an automotive-industry voice as the AMCC works to develop its requirements.”

Paul Wolcott, Senior Engineer for Additive Manufacturing, General Motors

“Developing certification criteria is a detailed and resource-intensive process, but the resulting value for our organization and the industry as a whole will be substantial. The AM CoE, along with ASTM, has created a program that will deliver significant benefits, and we are glad to contribute to this endeavor.”

Eddie Kavanagh, Senior Principal Engineer at Johnson & Johnson
