About the Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee
ASTM constituted the Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee (AMCC) to create an industry accepted qualification program for the additive manufacturing supply chain that could complement industry standards and provide valuable service to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and contract manufacturers.
Industry standards are being produced in record time to help set common requirements. Unfortunately, most manufacturers are still left to use company-specific procedures and internal specifications to determine requirements for qualifying potential contract manufacturers. To catalyze the wider adoption of additive manufacturing technology for functional applications, it is important to instill confidence in the end-users. This can be achieved by implementing a robust certification program developed with clear objectives, standardized testing protocols, proper documentation, and ongoing monitoring and validation.
Purpose of AMCC
- To provide an OEM industry-managed program for the certification of additive manufacturing service providers and suppliers
- To unify requirements for the AM supply chain
Uniqueness of AMCC
- Composed of OEMs from multiple industry sectors (such as aerospace and defense, automotive, healthcare) to help ensure that user requirements are addressed in the certification process.
- The multi-industry approach helps in harmonizing the best practices of each industry and establishing a common set of audit criteria.
- Industry agnostic audit criteria for additive manufacturing with flexibility to incorporate supplementary requirements specific to industry sectors.
- Decisions on a variety of programmatic issues such as levels of certification, frequency of audits, auditor requirements, audit failure levels, and many more.
Value of AMCC
- Supports a culture of compliance among additive manufacturing service providers/suppliers
- Supports continuous improvement by service providers/suppliers
- Provides a clear and consistent set of customer requirements
- Forms part of a risk mitigation strategy
- Reduces the costs of redundant audits for OEMs and suppliers
- Provides greater transparency
- Leads to higher quality audits
- Allows OEMs to direct resources to higher value/strategic areas
“The work of the AMCC enables a better understanding of the capabilities of additive manufacturing suppliers amidst the rapid growth of providers in this technology area. We are proud to support and actively participate in this crucial initiative.”
Melissa Orme, Vice President of Additive Manufacturing, The Boeing Company
“The efforts of the Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee stand to benefit our industry. The AMCC provides a great platform for end users across multiple sectors to collaboratively address common qualification challenges in additive manufacturing.”
Joseph Murphy, Associate Fellow, Lockheed Martin
“Like other sectors, the automotive industry stands to gain from a unified standard for the qualification of AM suppliers. Our participation in the AMCC has allowed us to help shape a checklist that meets our industry’s specific requirements.”
Suranjeeta Dhar, Corporate Technical Expert, Ford Motor Company
“Establishing a standardized certification for Additive Manufacturing (AM) service providers will help streamline industry efforts to develop a robust AM supply chain. We look forward to providing an automotive-industry voice as the AMCC works to develop its requirements.”
Paul Wolcott, Senior Engineer for Additive Manufacturing, General Motors
“Developing certification criteria is a detailed and resource-intensive process, but the resulting value for our organization and the industry as a whole will be substantial. The AM CoE, along with ASTM, has created a program that will deliver significant benefits, and we are glad to contribute to this endeavor.”
Eddie Kavanagh, Senior Principal Engineer at Johnson & Johnson
