Josh Barras is the Additive Manufacturing Principal Engineer for Global Business Development & Innovation Strategy at ASTM International. He has over 12 years’ experience in additive manufacturing and is a renowned process specialist in laser DED. In recent years, Josh has become a strategic leader and technology roadmap developer. He holds a prestigious UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship — a 7-year personal grant — hosted at ASTM International UK following four years of successful execution with TWI. Through this Fellowship, Josh led the introduction of high-speed DED into the UK and established a new research team and state-of-the-art equipment to propel DED innovation. Josh has supported over 100 companies in realising the benefits of advanced manufacturing through projects and technical consultancy, across many sectors including Aerospace, Automotive, Defense, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Yellow Goods, Mining, and high-value industrial manufacturing.

He holds an M.Phil and BEng, and has been a Chartered Engineer and Member of The Welding Institute since 2020. In 2022, he was awarded — by recognition — the first ‘International Additive Manufacturing Process Engineer DED-LB’ diploma from EWF.
