ASTM International Announces Additive Manufacturing Roadmap, Makes Key Hires

Today, ASTM International’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) released the public version of its Strategic Roadmap for Research and Development (R&D). The roadmap communicates the goals and current progress of the center’s R&D program to the additive manufacturing (AM) community.

According to Mahdi Jamshidinia, Ph.D., ASTM International’s additive manufacturing R&D project manager, “the roadmap provides a vision for the future of AM research and development to help align the activities of stakeholders around the common goal of harmonizing R&D with standards development.”

This roadmap is for all industry stakeholders and AM experts who wish to gain insight into upcoming AM standards, participate in AM R&D for standardization, and learn how the AM CoE is supporting industry needs by filling standard gaps. The roadmap was developed under the direction of the AM CoE R&D team and the research and innovation group (F42.90.05) of ASTM International’s additive manufacturing technologies committee (F42), which consists of recognized subject matter experts from the industry, academia, and government. This document is the outcome of several in-person meetings, teleconferences, and review sessions.

In addition, the center has also made two key hires to meet growing needs. Michael Kottman will serve as ASTM International’s additive manufacturing R&D project engineer. Kottman has eight years of experience with R&D for AM, with a focus on metal Directed Energy Deposition and modeling the relationship between process parameters and part performance. Before joining ASTM, Kottman served as an R&D engineer at Lincoln Electric where he developed materials and process solutions for welding and AM. He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in materials science and engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, USA.

Martin White will serve as the ASTM International’s head of additive manufacturing programs – Europe region. White has 20 years experience in both academia and industry. His recent career focus has been on the certification and production of aerospace structures. Before joining ASTM, White held positions with GKN Aerospace, Safran Landing Systems, and Frazer-Nash Consultancy, where he worked across multiple industries including aerospace, civil nuclear, defense, and oil and gas. He holds a doctorate in high temperature materials for gas turbine applications from Swansea University in the United Kingdom.
