ASTM International Hosts 3D Printing for Construction Workshop in Dubai, Launches UAE Website

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Feb. 24, 2020 – ASTM International’s United Arab Emirates Chapter and the organization’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence are hosting a workshop on Reshaping the Building and Construction Landscape with Additive Manufacturing on April 14 in Dubai.

This workshop will address emerging trends related to how 3D printing is used in construction with an emphasis on standardization needs.

“Advancements in AM have the potential to revolutionize the building and construction industry by reducing costs, shortening lead times, and supporting on-site construction and automation,” according to Dr. Alexander Liu, ASTM International’s head of additive manufacturing programs for the Asia-Pacific region. He notes that the workshop will bring many stakeholders and experts together to share ideas for accelerating AM acceptance in the building and construction industries.

Topics covered in the workshop will include but are not limited to:

  • AM applications in construction,
  • Materials development,
  • Building architecture and design,
  • Construction horticulture,
  • Robotics in AM construction,
  • Types of AM technologies for building and construction,
  • Testing, inspection, standardization, qualification, and certification,
  • AM construction beyond Earth, and more.

The workshop is open to building and construction industry professionals interested in exploring how AM technology can advance the industry through innovation and standardization. To register for the workshop, or for more information, click here.

In addition, the United Arab Emirates Chapter has launched its new website (www.astmuae.org), which will serve as a hub for information about the chapter including:

  • Membership,
  • Student activities,
  • Programs and services,
  • Standards activities, and
  • Unique events such as the AM workshop.

Technical questions can be directed to workshop co-chairs Dr. Liu (aliu@astm.org), Professor Tan Ming Jen (mmjtan@ntu.edu.sg), and Professor Rashid K. Abu Al-Rub (rashid.abualrub@ku.ac.ae).
