About the Course
Course Level: Intermediate to Advanced users
This course covers the requirements and routes to validation for metal additive manufacturing parts produced by powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition manufacturing processes. This course will leverage recent case studies from the PBF and DED world to provide context for Structural Integrity challenges and opportunities.
The 2-day training course is based on ISO and ASTM standards and is aimed at those who are using, or plan to use, AM in serial or critical applications and would like to learn more about the routes to Qualification and Certification. Attendees would be required to have a strong background in Additive Manufacturing.
The instructors have in-depth experience of Materials, Qualification & Certification, and making parts from Additive Manufacturing Methods. The learning methods are based on logic and experience, and real-life best practices (and lessons learned) will be shared. This is not a series of lectures; there will be discussions, mini-workshops, and plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Topics covered include:
- What are the Foundations required before Qualification & Certification… and what is Qual & Cert?
- Consequences & Classifications: What is the likelihood of failure of a component we are making and putting into service, and what is the consequence of a failure? What can we do about it as engineers?
- Requirements: The most important word in Qualification and Certification.
- What are the options for Qualification & Certification, and how can we leverage consensus-based Standards as a framework to operate safely and effectively?
- Materials: This underpins everything – what do we need to know, understand, and control? What does Process-Structure-Properties mean for Qualification & Certification? What about inspection & validation of performance?
- Part Production: How do we move through the pyramid of testing approach to enable production for parts?
- Qualification Testing: How do we move towards Certification by Analysis, supported by test for AM? What does Qualification Testing look like?
- Case Studies, Perspectives, and things that go bang (on purpose): What is being done in industry today? Case Studies in Direct Energy Deposition, as well as Powder Bed Fusion.
Exam will be 2 weeks after the training event, held online. After successful completion of the course, the participants will receive the ‘ASTM AM Quality Assurance Certificate’.
Dr. Martin White is a Materials & Structures Specialist, with 20 years of experience in both academic and industrial fields. His recent career has focused on the Certification & Production of Aerospace structures, ranging from the A350-900 XWB Main Landing Gear at Safran Landing Systems, to his most recent role as Chief Engineer for Additive Manufacturing at GKN Aerospace.
He spent his early career studying with Rolls Royce at Swansea University to obtain a Doctorate in High Temperature Materials for Gas Turbine applications, as well as a Masters in High Strength Steels for Landing Gears, before spending several years as a consultant at Frazer-Nash Consultancy. At Frazer-Nash, he worked across multiple industries – including Aerospace, Civil Nuclear, Defense, and Oil & Gas.
Martin has previously developed a fit-for-AM-purpose Quality Management System for Additive Manufacturing applications in Aerospace (as Chief Engineer) and achieved AS9100 & ISO9001 in under a year. He has also authored and given multiple training courses focusing on Quality Assurance, Standards, and how to enable Routes to Qualification and Certification for Critical Applications.

Shane Collins is a senior associate consultant at Wohlers Associates, powered by ASTM International. In this role, Shane is responsible for leading a best-in-class advisory services program for the additive manufacturing and advanced manufacturing industries. The services include but are not limited to custom training, standards education, support of certification needs, and beyond. He is a 20-year veteran of the additive manufacturing industry holding various positions in product management, business development, and operations for both 3D printing machine manufacturers and tier 1 part suppliers in both polymers and metals. He led several metal powder bed fusion standards and holds the position of Chair of the ASTM F42.07 on additive manufacturing Applications and was formerly for 10 years, Chair of F42.05 on Materials and Process. Shane was presented the ASTM Robert F. Painter Memorial Award in 2017, the ASTM Award of Merit in 2018 and has the honorary title of Fellow, the highest ASTM recognition. He is a co-author of publications in the powder bed fusion of 17-4 stainless steel, nickel alloy 625, and nickel alloy 718. Shane graduated from Purdue University in 1980 with a BS in Management. Prior to joining ASTM, Shane was the V.P. of Additive Industries of North America, Inc and the General Manager of the Process and Application Development Center in Camarillo, CA.
