Determining the Suitability of Parts for Additive Manufacturing

April 22, 2021

About the Webinar:

Determining the suitability of parts for AM processes is sometimes challenging, especially for those who are new to AM technologies. Selecting a suitable part or a part family is the first step toward integrating additive manufacturing into an existing manufacturing ecosystem or adapting AM as a new business. An appropriate selection of parts is crucial to demonstrate a successful and sustainable business case. Different factors need to be considered in selecting parts that are feasible to be produced using AM technology. Currently, these considerations are not based on accepted standards or methodologies and instead are often based on individual judgments derived from personal experiences.

This webinar will describe a framework developed by John Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) for determining the suitability of parts for AM. The framework will be demonstrated on several example parts with various suitability for AM. Legal considerations will also be briefly described.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this webinar, the attendees will achieve the following

  • • A better understanding of how to determine when AM should be used and not used for parts of interest
  • • Technical considerations for AM Suitability of parts
  • • Key legal and policy considerations
  • • Understanding on how to develop an AM part suitability framework internally for your organization

Who Should Attend:

  • AM Managers
  • AM Design Engineers
  • Manufacturing Engineers
  • Research Engineers
  • AM Process Engineers
