Non-Metallic AM Testing (NIAR)

Project: Guidance on Polymer AM Mechanical Test Methods

Partner Lead

NIAR

Challenge

Because machining is often necessary to meet ASTM geometric dimensioning and tolerance requirements (V-notch, holed), the ability to generate consistent acceptable failure modes is critical and modified fixtures are often required.

Objective

A standard guide(s) will be developed to address the standard test methods used during recent polymer AM qualification and equivalency test programs

Approach

  • Coordinate with Committees D20, D30, and F42 and NIST

  • Develop guide(s) including targeted mechanical tests/round robin studies in collaboration with other organizations

Impact

NIAR will focus on mechanical testing issues surrounding polymers used in additive manufacturing. They will look to create guidelines and best practices aimed at applying existing mechanical testing methods in this fast-growing area.
